Rashes!!!!

Have you ever noticed a rash on your child's foot? Did you know there are only two known causes of rashes on the feet? Well.... one is Hand, Foot and Mouth (HFMD), and now it's the season! HFMD is a viral infection caused mainly by Coxsackievirus, and it is highly contagious.

The hallmark symptoms of HFMD include:

Fever

Sore throat

Painful sores or blisters in the mouth

Rash or red spots on the hands, feet, and sometimes buttocks

HFMD, like any other virus-caused disease, has no specific treatment and is mainly treated with "supportive care." You are primarily going to help your child be more comfortable while the virus "runs its course."

So rest, plenty of fluids, and over-the-counter fever relievers.

However, the main focus of concern is the sore throat. A sore throat due to painful sores can easily cause dehydration because of feeding and drinking refusal. Offer cold, soft foods and avoid tomato-based and citrus foods. Please inform me if you notice a decrease in drinking and/or eating. They need to be seen. Some prescription medications can assist us, and the last resort is getting IV Fluids.

Prevention:

-Handwashing

-Stay home from school and daycare until fever-free and no longer contagious (after one week from the start of symptom)

-Disinfect surfaces and toys

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is uncomfortable, but most children recover fully with time and supportive care.
